A superb rare painting of early Los Angeles by well known California Impressionist, Thorwarld A. Probst. The painting is in excellent condition, having been recently professionally cleaned, with only a very few small areas of touch-up. The painting is signed, lower right, "Thorwald Probst and the reverse bears two partial labels and a label apparently from Probst's own studio at 3445 West First Street; stating the title as "Across & Up The Street". There is another old label, possibly from the estate, listing his biography. The frame appears to be original to the painting.

Thorwald Probst is well known to collectors of Southern California art and is listed in many of the important art biographical reference books. Probst studied at the Corcoran Art School, Washington, D.C.; Academy of Art, San Francisco as well as study in art schools in Denmark. Settling in Los Angeles in 1916 he was active in the early LA art scene. In 1926 he opened a gallery in Beverly Hills selling his works as well as other local artists.
